STEVENS-POPE IDEAL NO. 54 “SCHUETZEN SPECIAL” SINGLE SHOT RIFLE

Bbl. 32″ octagon to round measures 1 1/16″ at the muzzle and is fitted with a Pope false muzzle and bullet starter.. Famed barrel maker Harry Pope sold his rifling machinery to J. Stevens and started work with them in a supervisory role in 1901. The Stevens-Pope barrels were available on order for Stevens, Winchester high wall, Ballard and other target rifles until 1913. The top flat is stamped “STEVENS-POPE” over the standard single line J. Stevens address. The bottom barrel flat is stamped with Pope’s barrel number “1864”. The front of the frame is model marked “54”.This stunning rifle is the highest grade offered by Stevens. It is based on the Model 44 1/2 action. Harry Pope designed this improved falling block action shortly after arriving at Stevens. It has a drop forged receiver designed for smokeless powder pressures. This late production rifle features deep cut style scroll engraving. The right game scene depicts a bear while the left shows a running whitetail buck. Standard features include double set triggers, ripple case colored frame and Pope Special lever with 2 piece wood grips. The perch belly cheekpiece stock and schnable tipped forend are of fine Black Walnut with elaborate hand checkering that is designed around the base of the factory palm rest. The special Schuetzen buttplate is nickel finished. Sights consist of a Stevens No. 210 globe front with extra discs, a Stevens-Pope No.110 tang sight and an added Lyman Super Target Spot scope. Weight with scope is 15 lbs, 3.4 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: includes a wood shooters box containing: an Ideal No. 6 powder measure, Pope RE and DE capper, Stevens-Pope bullet lubricating pump with dies, bullet mold marked with matching barrel number “1864:, King powder Co. FFFG powder tin, Muller “Valvespout” oil tin, 1 Springfield armory box containing 38 lubricated lead bullets with 1928 date,1 partial box of Remington UMC No. 2 1/2 nickeled primers, 2 sealed boxes of 100 Peters No. 15 primers, 1 partial tin box of UMC No. 2 1/2 primers with red label, 1 tin primer box containing 3 front sight discs, wood cartridge case & bullet blocks, a small box containing a short starter plus other assorted tools and cases. Non related items include a Craftsman “Golden Rule, 50 years of value, 1886-1936” tape measure. A modern foam lined rifle case also holds: the false muzzle with bullet seater, a lubricating pump, loading rod, sight inserts, 2 firing pins, along with a modern cleaning rod & supplies.
