NICELY DECORATED WHEELLOCK PETRONEL

Essentially a pistol/carbine the petronel was meant to be used while on horseback and fired with the short butt resting on one’s chest. This example has 21″ half round half octagon barrel with brass rear sight and poincon at breech with the initials “HS”. Small size wheellock with sliding pan cover is undecorated. Newer European walnut stock extends to muzzle with scrimmed bone cap and is pinned to barrel. Down turned grip has bone buttplate and is built with small right hand cheekpiece. Stock is nicely embellished with intricate inlays of bone depicting mermaids, birds, griffins, dogs and an elephant surrounded by dots of decorated Mother of Pearl within small bone scroll background. A large inlay on face of cheekpiece depicts a knight on horseback slaying a dragon. A patchbox on right side has matching dovetailed cover. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: invoice for this piece dated 2013 including duty and shipping in the amount of about $24,000 Euros. STATUS: ANTIQUE.
