FINELY MADE CUSTOM MAUSER DANGEROUS GAME RIFLE BY NATE BISHOP

Nate Bishop was a custom riflesmith who started working in the 50’s & 60’s and was one of Elmer Keith’s favorites. This fine rifle, possibly one of Nate’s last, is marked “Show Gun by Nate Bishop 3/87″ in barrel channel. It has 24” medium weight round barrel fitted with quarter rib holding one standing, two folding leaf express rear sight which is marked with caliber at rear. Banded on front ramp holds silver bead. Sling eye is soldered to bottom of barrel. Large ring standard length model 98 Mauser action sourced from a Chilean carbine has S# and “BU” proofs on receiver ring. Mauser Oberndorf markings are on side wall. Action has been altered to accept long 416 Rigby cartridge and a square bridge is added. Bolt has had new handle with pear shaped knob added and a commercial trigger is fitted. Custom drop box bottom metal with hinged straddle floorplate has release button in trigger guard bow. Crisply shaped trap steel capped pistol grip stock made from a piece of very finely marbled and somewhat fiddle figured French walnut measures 14″ over Silver type leather faced pad. Squared and swept shadow line cheekpiece, bolt stop surround, sling eye pedestal base on toeline and cartridge ejection port are very cleanly shaped. Superbly executed multi-point pattern checkering at grip and around forend is partially borderless with remainder very neatly mullered. Stock has rosewood forend tip and hand rubbed oil finish is exceptionally fine. STATUS: MODERN. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection.
