REALLY COOL RIGBY BOLT RIFLE MADE FOR 1 ARM VETERAN

25-6447 | Cal. 7×57. | S# 57716 (Mauser). | Rigby # 4610 (1919).

Rigby factory records indicate this rifle was made on 11 October 1919 for a Maj. J. D. Venables. “Stock for one arm”. J.D. Venables was a Major in the First Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers and earned the DSO. This unit was much blooded during WWI with thousands of casualties in such battles as Zandvoorde, Belle Waarde Ridge and battle of the Somme. Rifle has 21-1/2″ barrel with sleeved on base for one standing, two folding leaf express rear sight, partially sleeved on sling eye and silver bead front sight in standard Rigby base. Top of barrel is engraved “John Rigby & Co 43 Sackville St. London. W.”. British “BV” proofs, caliber and S# are on rear. Intermediate length square bridge Mauser action with “BU” proofs and S# on left side of large receiver ring has had Mauser info removed from side wall, bolt handle slightly turned down. Bottom metal with hinged floorplate having lever release is altered with removal of trigger guard and trigger hole plugged. Specially made stock exhibits Rigby styling and has butt shaped with deep extension of grip area which is fitted with a Silver pad. A peg type pistol grip is formed under rear sight area and fitted with trap grip cap. A new trigger is installed in this area with long rod held by steel sideplate remotely engaging modified original trigger and sear. A shotgun type trigger guard is installed with bow marked with Rigby S# 4610 (Rigby #4571 is stamped on action seen out of wood). Diamond shaped panels of checkering are on each side of butt area; front grip is also checkered. This rifle can be used with either arm by placing muzzle on ones foot. Rifle could be stopped from rotating with knee contact to operate bolt and then raised into position for firing. STATUS: CURIO.
