UNIQUE FINE AKRON, OHIO MADE CIVIL WAR BOWIE KNIFE, INSCRIBED TO 16th OHIO SOLDIER
02-26010
This very fine well-made Bowie knife shows excellent cutlery skills for blacksmith D. A. Scott, who donated a “splendidly finished bowie knife” for charity auction as noted by Akron newspaper December 19, 1861. Bowie measures 16.75” overall, well balanced meaty 11.5” clip point blade, thick .30” at ricasso, nicely beveled top edge, stamped deeply on ricasso “D.A. SCOTT”, 4” shaped cross guard, tapered octagonal rosewood handle with German silver ferrule & pommel cap, octagonal capstan nut. The original sheath is copper covered with leather veneer, German silver ferrule at throat. This is a very attractive & unique survivor by rarely seen Northern Civil War Bowie Knives.
David A. Scott (1813-1885) is listed in newspaper ads and census throughout his adult life as blacksmith & mechanic. This is the only known signed example of his work and probably the knife mentioned in 1861 newspaper article. Inscribed escutcheon “S. N. Coe” which is unique name in Civil War database is for attorney Silas N. Coe (1837-1910) in neighboring Wayne County, who served Oct. 15, 1861 to Oct.31, 1864 as corporal in Co. G, 16th OVI. The 16th fought at many actions including Battle of Philippi, Skirmish at Bowman’s Place, Battle of Rich Mountain, Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Battle of Fort Hindman, Battle of Grand Gulf, Battle of Champion Hill, Battle of Big Black River Bridge, Siege of Vicksburg making 2 major assaults May 19 & May 22, 1864, Siege of Jackson, and the Red River Campaign. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of page 141, “ACCOUTREMENTS V” by James R. Johnston where featured on full page, bio research of maker & recipient. STATUS: NON-GUN.
