FINE CIVIL WAR AMES 1863 DATED BRONZE 12-POUNDER POUNDER MOUNTAIN HOWITZER

Registry # 31 Cal. 4.27” (12 pounder).

Model 1835 US mountain howitzer bronze gun mounted on good reproduction prairie carriage. These “petite” cannon are among the few Civil War cannon that are small enough to be displayed in gun room. 38” overall, muzzle face marked “AMCo” (Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Mass); “1863” date of manufacture “No. 31” (31st Mtn. Howitzer made at Ames in 1863), “225” (225 pounds); “ABD” (inspector-Alexander B. Dyer). Rimbase number “21”. This gun was proofed February 17, 1863 and is one of about 40 documented, most in museums. These small guns were used in many engagements in the civil war, especially in mountainous terrain. These guns were designed to fire anti-personnel ammunition, explosive shell with case shot, or canister. Total weight on carriage is about 500 pounds. . PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection.
