SCARCE 1ST MODEL CONFEDERATE GRISWOLD & GUNNISON REVOLVER & HOLSTER

01-28701 | Cal. 36. | S# 1252.

Standard first model brass frame Griswold revolver just added to database in 2020 from North Carolina family collection. It was manufactured mid-1863 and paid for September 3, 1863 as one of 198 revolvers.
Revolver has all typical characteristics found on 1st model Griswolds, half round barrel housing found up to about S# 1500. Serial number “1252” is stamped on right side of cylinder, bottom of barrel housing, frame, & trigger guard. Secondary number “22” found on wedge, hammer, trigger guard, backstrap, & loading arm flat. Cryptic inspection “Y” is found on bottom of barrel, internally on back of frame, trigger guard, backstrap & back of cylinder. Roman numeral assembly mark “XVIII” is found on frame, backstrap & trigger guard. Soldier carved butt of grips to hold lanyard ring which is seen on so many Confederate revolvers. Accompanying military flap holster appears to be Confederate copy of regulation US, made without plug and sewn tip, jappaned furniture tack in place of brass finial, fits revolver well. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: my most current article on Griswold revolvers linked here and printed copy accompanying this lot.  PROVENANCE: Roger Ballard Estate Collection. STATUS: ANTIQUE.
