EXTREMELY RARE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1909 BOLO BAYONET FOR THE MODEL 1903 RIFLE
| 02-26032 |
This bayonet represents an attempt to develop a multipurpose tool for use in areas of heavy brush and jungle while serving its original purpose as a weapon. The bayonet was described by ordnance documents as a “heavy brush knife, useful for clearing brush, sharpening pegs or valuable for personal combat in extreme cases”. This bayonet was produced in very small quantities, research indicates only 102 were produced. The bayonet is 18 1/2″ overall with a 14″ straight back chisel ground blade. The blade is approximately 2 1/4″ wide at its curved belly. Left ricasso is marked “SA / flaming bomb / 1911”. Right ricasso is marked “U.S. / 40”. The straight crossguard with muzzle ring is raked slightly forward. Crossguard is pierced on the lower end with approximately 1/8″ hole which matches stud in scabbard. The back of the grip is contoured to match the pommel, which is the same pattern as the Krag bayonet. Smooth walnut grips secured by two rivets. The bayonet is accompanied by its correct original brown leather scabbard. The scabbard is marked on the back “ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / 1911 / H.E.K.”. Three sets of inspector’s initials are randomly stamped “P.M.M.C. / W.G. / L.S.”. There is also a very faint inked marking which appear partially as “MC. P. 11TH / H.F.S.”. Scabbard features a copper-colored throat and a leather belt loop riveted to the back. Scabbard tip has a finial with a ring for tie down. STATUS: NON-GUN.
