inv# 02-14806

4.5″ x 5.25″ Leather veneered case, gold embossed w/ American eagle above “MARCUS A. RENO”. This is a rare & seldom seen type presentation photography on glass w/ vivid “aluminum white” background, circa 1885. Image has fantastic contrast & detail, individual hairs in moustache are distinct. Image is protected by cover glass & is fitted into removable holder in velvet lined mortise. Images of the style were awfully expensive in their day, & only one other example can be located. Photo background is powdered aluminum which was very previous in 1880. Before the turn of the century, aluminum was a luxury metal. Napoleon entertained guests w/ aluminum flatware, much more precious than gold at the time.

Marcus A. Reno (1834-1889). Reno was a graduate of the US military Academy, fought in the American Civil War but is best known for surviving the Battle of Little Bighorn w/ much controversy.
