REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA EXTREMELY RARE “UNITED STATES” BRANDED CHARLEVILLE MUSKET
inv # 01-17752

This is a fine example of a rare and desirable Revolutionary War “United States” branded Model 1763 Charleville musket. On March 31, 1777, George Washington directed that all Continental arms be stamped with “United States”. According to George D. Moller in his text American Military Shoulder Arms, Vol. I., 1993, this is the earliest identification mark on Continental muskets. In addition to the large 2-line brand; the lock has “US” surcharge at tail and there is another later “US” cartouche in a stippled circle from Federal era. Musket is in standard Charleville configuration 45” .75 caliber barrel, iron mounted with sling swivels attached to middle band and trigger guard. Accompanying bayonet fits musket well with an early ring closure.
