OUTSTANDING CIVIL WAR REGIMENTAL FLAG FOR THE UNION RIFLES WHICH BECAME PART OF THE 10TH NEW JERSEY INFANTRY

Inv. 02-15620

This beautiful flag measures 61″ x 56″ including 2 1/2″ of gold fringe on 3 sides. It is housed in a gold finished frame measuring 67″ x 63″. The frame has a 2 3/8″ medallion in each corner decorated w/ an American flag. The flag body is blue & features a seal of the State of New Jersey surrounded by 34 stars. The 34 star flag became official on July 4, 1861 & remained the official United States flag until July 4, 1863. These facts tell us that this regimental flag was likely made between July 4, 1861 & July 4, 1863. Above the Seal of New Jersey is a ribbon that reads, “PRESENTED BY THE LADIES OF LUMBERTON TOWNSHIP”. A ribbon below the seal reads, “TO THE UNION RIFLES”. The Union Rifles of New Jersey appear to be from the Newark area & joined the 10th New Jersey Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The 10th New Jersey served honorably & fought in the Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania, Battle of Cold Harbor, Battle of Strasburg, Battle of Fisher’s Hill, Third Battle of Winchester, Battle of Cedar Creek & Third Battle of Petersburg.
