The front is inscribed “M. A. Reno / USA / Bvt Brig Gen. U. S. Vols” and below that “Ft. Meade, Dakota / March 31, 1881” … Inside back cover “Benteen / 7th U.S. Cav. / Presented by Major Reno / after dismissal / poor old Reno was always in trouble. Cause / a bad egg / though, for last offence he / should not have been dismissed. / Sturgis ground him to dust.”.
